The Problem: Spiraling Data Centre Energy Use
A Data Centre typically uses up to 10 to 15 times more power per square foot than your average office block, and can use up to 100 times more per square foot if it is poorly configured.
In the future, Data Centres will have to deal with less available power and the rising costs of energy. Consolidate IT is advising Data Centre managers to monitor the power consumption of their infrastructure as it will impact their IT budget, now and in the future. Gartner says: 2008: 50% of the Fortune-1000 will be out of power and space for their data centres. “Data archives energy consumption will grow from 1.5% to 2.5% of total energy consumption over the next 5 years.”

The energy consumed by IT infrastructure generates heat. With a typical data Centre consuming a watt in cooling for each watt used in computation, this cooling also consumes energy. This is the total energy usage, or Total Cost of Energy. Generally, the power consumption has to be multiplied by 1.5 to calculate the actual energy consumption.
